SADD
1) What do you do in your club?
One of our first activities is providing non-alcoholic punch during the Open House on October 5. We have a display table which contains information about SADD as well as suggestions for non-alcoholic parties. Our display is also educational in that it contains statistics, names of those who have been killed or injured by drunk drivers, and photos of cars that were driven by drunk drivers. We distribute red ribbons in December as a reminder to not drink and drive during the holidays. SADD has sponsored guest speakers, such as Cathy Hornback, whose husband was seriously injured by a drunk driver. SADD also sponsors the ENCARE assembly once every three years. The assembly includes a very graphic slide presentation which shows the consequences of drinking and driving. SADD also worked with Student Council in sponsoring the "Prom Night" assembly which was to be held in the Spring of 1999.
SADD has an information booth set up during the 8th Grade Open House. In the past we have hosted a Splash Bash in which the proceeds have gone to the Bill Hornback Fund. We have had a booth at the Nurses Club Health Fair, participated in the 24-Hour Relay, and we also distribute carnations with a message from SADD to the graduates.
2) What is the purpose of your club?
Students Against Drunk Driving and Destructive Decisions continues to have its main emphasis on preventing drunk driving, however it has also broadened its outreach to include drug abuse, suicide, AIDS, and domestic violence. SADD’s main philosophy is that of caring and helping others with difficult and potentially destructive decisions that they may face. SADD works hard to provide information to the students at BBCHS and to the community.
3) How do people join?
People join the club by attending one of the first two meetings which are held in September. We do not charge dues for this club, however, we do ask students to provide candy for the Homecoming Parade.
4) Are there any requirements?
One of the most important SADD programs is the "Contract For Life" which all SADD members are required to sign as well as their parent or guardian. "This contract empowers the student to be responsible for their own actions. It also stands for caring. Its’ a contract you sign with your parents...It shows that they care about you and that they’re willing to help you in whatever situation. It is also preventive...it reminds you not to ride with someone who has been drinking or using illicit drugs."
