Gene Manipulation

Background: The majority of today’s society are currently taking medication or undergoing medical procedures to counteract an abnormality, either health-related or cosmetic.  There is currently a bill on the table to fund genetic research in hopes of one day preventing these abnormalities or imperfections before birth.

Some groups believe that no one on this planet has a right to determine what is best for all of
mankind.  Others believe that if we have the capability to eliminate pain and suffering in the world, it is our obligation as a society to improve the quality and length of life of our species despite possible risks.

Problem:  Where will the federal government draw the line in conducting human genetic research?

Learning Challenge: Due to the controversial nature of this issue, you and a group of your peers have been hired to take an unbiased look at the pros and cons of gene manipulation.  After looking at all sides, you are to advise your government official of your decision for or against this bioethical issue and be able to debate your position publicly.
