Literature Grammar

Oh no, I left my book in my locker!  How do I read my assignment?  Here's an option to help you out.  Many classic works of literature are available online.

Are the online versions exactly the same as my book?  Short stories, poems and plays are usually the very same text.  Novels, however, may be slightly different.  Often the textbooks used in school are excerpted or adapted.  Chapter numbers may be different.  Vocabulary may be slightly different.

So why do I need to bother with my textbook?  Again, online versions may be slightly different.  Also, your teacher will likely assign readings based on page numbers which are not available on the web.  Lastly, your textbook has marvelous ways to assist you with footnotes, glossaries, and study questions.  We provide these links to you as a solution to a temporary problem (being without your textbook); this page is NOT meant to be a replacement for your textbook.

Why can't I find the story, poem or novel I want?  Not every book is available online.  If works are less than 75 years old, the original author or his or her descendents may own the copyright, and you must pay them by purchasing a book.  Older works are considered to be "in the public domain" and you need not pay to read them.

Links to online texts are listed according to their place in the BBCHS English curriculum.

Oh no, the link is broken!  Although we try to keep this page updated, the web is a very flexible place.  Websites come and go very quickly.  Try going to a search engine like Google and typing in your title surrounded by quotation marks, a plus sign, and the word text to find another link.  For example:
