Texting & Driving Campaign
In January a $475 grant was provided to
Social Worker Heather Neuman who used the money to purchase thumb bands.
Similar to the popular wrist bands which raise awareness for various causes,
the thumb bands were purchased for the students to wear as a reminder of the
serious consequences of texting while driving. The bands were distributed
to students who pledged to refrain from texting when driving. These
students also signed a large banner in the main lobby at the school. Ms.
Neuman says, “According to DrivingDistracted.org, in 2009, 5474 people were
killed in the U.S. due to driving distracted and 20% of car crash related
injuries were the result of using a hand held device. Though drivers of all
ages have been guilty of distracted driving, research shows that the
greatest proportion of distracted drivers are those under the age of 20.
This is a nationwide concern. The message on the bands reads: texting
kills” and is a sobering reminder for our students to think twice.”

Academic Rewards
The BBCHS Academic
Rewards is a program designed to give students extra incentive to work hard
in their classes. Students who earn straight A’s, all A’s & B’s or raise
their grade point average are eligible for a variety of perks provided by
areas restaurants and businesses. Another reward is a bumper sticker that
reads, “Proud Parent of an Academic Achiever.” Rebecca Heddins, Academic
Rewards coordinator said, “So far this year we have distributed 645 bumper
stickers. As insignificant at it may be to some people, we have found that
BBCHS students strive to improve their grades in order to earn the honor of
the sticker.”

Boiler Creations
This fall the Foundation awarded a grant to students in Mrs. Boseo's
and Mrs. Diehl's class to start their very own greeting card business called
Boiler Creations. The students are learning a variety of skills
through this venture, including teamwork, work ethic and money management.
The grant money was the seed money to invest in a cutting press, paper,
organizational materials and other supplies. The students have been
hard at work creating a variety of cards. If you would like to support
the business by purchasing cards, use the order form below:
Birthday and
Thank You Cards
Holiday Cards

Initial Note Cards
Arrangements can be made for you to pick the cards up at BBCHS in the main
office. For more information call Abby Diehl, 815-937-3707, ext. 6503. |
